Prescription charges were first introduced in 1952 for patients in the community and, except for a three-year period between 1965 and 1968, have been levied ever since.

On 1 April 2011, the Scottish Government abolished prescription charges.  However, patients that were previously exempt from prescription charges may still require to have an exemption certificate under certain circumstances (for example, if they wish to have a prescription dispensed in England.
